Mercy rule - A mercy rule, also well known by the slightly less polite term slaughter rule or, less commonly, knockout rule, brings a sports event to an early end when one team has a very large and presumably insurmountable lead over the other team. The mercy rule is most common in games such as baseball or softball, where there is no game clock and play could theoretically continue forever, although it is also used in sports such as hockey, football, and soccer.
Fourth official - In a game of association football (soccer), the fourth official is a match official who assists the referee in a variety of tasks, and who may be called upon to replace another match official.
Back-pass rule - The back-pass rule is a rule in the game of football (soccer). Even inside the penalty area, a goalkeeper cannot use his hand to catch the ball if his teammates pass back the ball to him by feet.
Fifty move rule - The fifty move rule in chess states that a player can claim a draw if no capture has been made and no pawn has been moved in the last fifty consecutive moves. The relevant part of the official FIDE laws of chess is rule 9.
